Every sunrise brings new hope. Our boys learn, play, heal, and rebuild their lives one steady day at a time. Discover how a simple daily routine becomes a path to safety, growth, and a brighter future.
🌞 Morning: Starting the Day Together
The day begins early as the sun rises, casting light over our community. The boys gather together for morning prayer, creating a peaceful and focused start to the day. It’s a quiet moment of connection that sets a positive tone for everything that follows.
After prayer, breakfast is served — a nutritious meal made possible by our garden and the reliable water from our solar-powered well. The boys usually enjoy traditional Zambian foods such as thobwa, a nourishing drink made from maize and groundnuts; sampo, a hearty dish of boiled maize, often served with peanut butter; or sweet potatoes, grown locally and rich in energy. With every bite, the boys are nourished not only in body, but also in spirit, knowing that their meals are rooted in local tradition and sustained in a reliable, dignified way.

Morning chores follow. The boys take turns sweeping, tidying rooms, helping in the kitchen, or watering plants. Twice a week, they also wash their clothes, contributing to their sense of responsibility and self-care. These daily tasks may seem small, but they teach valuable life skills and foster a deep sense of teamwork, while giving the boys a chance to contribute to the upkeep of their shared home.

📚 Learning in Two Shifts
School is at the heart of the day, with classes running in two shifts to accommodate every boy’s needs. Some boys dive into their lessons right away, while others engage in life-skills sessions, reading, or helping with household tasks until it’s their turn in the classroom.
For many of the boys, education is a rare opportunity — one that offers a chance to break the cycle of poverty in their families. Many of them will be the first in their families to finish their education, paving the way for future generations. The school provides a lifeline to the most vulnerable children in the Makululu area, giving them the chance to not only learn but to dream of a brighter future.

🍽️ Midday: A Shared Meal and a Short Break
At midday, the boys gather for lunch. It’s a time to relax, recharge, and share not just a meal but also stories and laughter. The meal always includes nshima, a traditional Zambian dish made from maize flour. Nshima is the foundation of most Zambian meals, and there is truly no meal without it. It’s served with a relish — a flavorful accompaniment made from vegetables, beans, or sometimes meat, providing balance and nutrition. After lunch, the boys take a short break, some resting while others engage in light activities to prepare for the afternoon ahead.

🏀 4 PM Oratory: Sports, Energy, and Community
The afternoon brings the opening of the oratory, where the yard comes alive with energy. Football, volleyball, netball, dancing — and plenty of cheering — fill the air. Local children often join in, creating a dynamic, welcoming space where everyone can participate.
The oratory is more than just a time for play. It’s where the boys learn teamwork, build confidence, and develop important social skills, all while enjoying the physical activity they need to stay healthy and strong.
🌆 Evening: Slowing Down with Purpose
As the day winds down, the boys take time to refresh. They shower, tidy up, and prepare supper together, creating a calm transition from the busy afternoon. Evenings vary: some nights are spent practicing music, others are for studying, and on weekends, they gather for a movie or special activity.

🛏️ Night: Rest and Routine
When the day comes to a close, after a night prayer, the boys retreat to their rooms. Simple, clean, and quiet, the rooms offer a sense of stability and peace. A consistent bedtime helps to provide the security many of them lacked before arriving here, allowing them to rest and recharge for another day of growth.
🌱 Why This Daily Rhythm Matters
What might seem like an ordinary routine is, in fact, the foundation for extraordinary change. Each part of the day plays a crucial role in:
- Building stability and security through predictable routines.
- Supporting educational growth with flexible, tailored learning.
- Encouraging teamwork and responsibility through shared chores and group activities.
- Nurturing physical and emotional well-being with activities that foster connection and confidence.
- Preparing for the future by offering life skills, vocational training, and a pathway to reintegration with their families.
Through this steady rhythm, the boys are not only learning valuable skills; they are rebuilding their lives, one day at a time, with hope and purpose.
